Wings of world

Muziris has 'seen civilizations being born, wars being waged and history being written' From Roman and Arab navigator's explorations in and around the region that really opened up Kerala’s doors to globalization, paving way for other traders and explorers to make 'Spice Route', one of history’s most significant trade routes. Muziris’s location on the route was so prized that almost all nations across the continent engaged in trade with this antique land.
The trade relations of Muziris with Romans and Arabs for about two thousand five hundred years are a glorious chapter in the history of Kerala. The 'Hermapollon', a ship carrying spices exported from Muziris to other countries, was a historically important vessel that connected Muziris with foreign countries by sea. Furthermore, the maps on Conrad Peutinger's Peutinger Table, which marks ancient world cities and centers of commerce, trace the history of Muziris' trade relations with various world trade centers.

About Logistic Business
As per the information provided by britannica, logistics, in business, the organized movement of materials. The term was first associated with the military but gradually spread to cover civilians business activities. Logistics implies that a number of separate activities are coordinated. In 1991 the Council of Logistics Management, a trade organization based in the United States, defined logistics as: “the process of planning, implementing, and controlling the efficient, effective flow and storage of goods, services, and related information from point of origin to point of consumption for the purpose of conforming to customer requirements.” The last few words limit the definition to business enterprises. Logistics also can be thought of as transportation after taking into account all the related activities that are considered in making decisions about moving materials.
Air freight is another term for air cargo that is, the shipment of goods through an airplane. Air transport services are the most valuable when it comes to moving express shipments around the globe. Just like the commercial or passenger airlines, air freight flies in the same gateways.
In summary, air freight is merely a goods carrier moves on an airplane, be it a cargo freighter or passenger flight. Just about anything can be air freight, such as electronics and clothing. Most often, goods are shipped as air freight for either international transportation or speedy delivery
The express shipping options of air freight make it a valuable option for coordinating time sensitive shipments to almost anywhere in the world. This can be particularly advantageous for smaller and mid-sized companies as it allows them to participate in international trade in an expeditious and effective manner. Shipping by air also offers the advantage of a high level of security as airport controls over cargo are tightly managed.
Sea Freight is a method of transporting large amounts of goods using carrier ships. Goods are packed into containers and then loaded onto a vessel. A typical cargo ship can carry around 18,000 containers, which means that sea freight is a cost-efficient way to transport high quantities over large distances.
Benefits vs Disadvantages
BenefitsSea freight is economically and environmentally superior to other forms of product delivery service, but only if you are looking to transport large quantities or if the destination country is far away. However, even with the option of LCL, courier services and Air Freight may still be better options depending on the product in question.
Road Freight is the physical process of transporting cargo by road using motor vehicles. In this case, road is a lane/route between the point of departure and the point of destination. Compared to other types of transport system such as sea and air, the cost of maintaining roads is cheaper. Road freight can be in certain cases, the only way of transport in/to rural areas where other mode of transports is not available.
The Air Waybill (AWB), also known as the air waybill, is a document in the freight business that is attached to an air freight shipment as a shipping document. First of all, this is a contract between the shipper and the airline, which certifies that the cargo airline has taken over precisely specified cargo. For this purpose, the AWB contains a shipping list with a list of special instructions and other accompanying documents from the sender. It thus serves equally as a freight invoice, as an insurance certificate and as a delivery confirmation. Goods cannot be transported by air freight without an AWB because in this case they are not released for air transport. It is therefore essential for logistics to issue an AWB. Otherwise the schedule cannot be met. The only exception to this rule is onboard courier transport, where no AWB is required because the shipment is checked in as baggage rather than air freight.
The Advance Filing Rule is a regulation that requires all carriers to electronically file the detailed description of the cargo on board their ship when calling/passing through the Chinese and Japanese ports. The detailed description must be submitted 24 hours before the ship departs from the port of origin or port of loading. Otherwise, the ship may not be unloaded without the express permission of the customs authorities.
A Bill of Lading is a required document provided by a carrier to a shipper detailing a type of shipment, quantity and the destination of the shipment. The document serves three main functions. It serves as a contract, a shipment receipt and specifies the title of ownership of the cargo.
One of the key importance of BOL is to ensure the delivery of goods to the importer and the receipt of payment by the exporter.
A booking is an arrangement made to have a room, event or service reserved at the particular time in the future. In logistics, booking is a customers request to reserve goods, storage space or services provided by various suppliers. It includes the agreement on transport conditions such as price, time and liability.
A cargo list is a list of goods that are onboard a vessel scheduled to arrive at a port. On arrival, the list is given to the customs authority of the country to show the detailed of the number of goods to be unloaded at the port.
A carrier is a company or a person legally entitled to transport goods by land, water, and air. Usually, the carrier works with shippers to ship goods from one place to the other.
There are two main types of carriers or methods by which goods are delivered:Commercial invoice is a legal document provided by a seller to a buyer in an international transaction. The document serves as a contract and proof of sales between the two parties. It details the number of goods sold, the prices and their value.
Commercial invoice is an essential document when exporting or importing goods. For the clearance of imported goods, commercial invoice must be presented to the customs authority who uses the document to assess the amount due on taxes.
A consignee is a person or company to whom goods is to be delivered to. The stakeholders in the transportation process are the consignee, consignor and carrier. The consignor dispatches shipments to the consignee via a delivery service provider who is the carrier. A freight forwarder can be considered an intermediate consignee.
A consignor is a person or a company that is responsible for initiating and organising a shipment. A consignor could be a seller or an exporter (who ships goods from one country to the other).
Depending on the seller, the process of shipment and the number of parties to the movement of goods vary. When goods are ordered, the buyer’s information is sent to the consignor. On receiving the order, the consignor chooses a carrier who then uses its carrier assets to move the goods from the point of origin to the recipient or to the place of destination.
Container load is a shipment that fills a container by bulk or with the maximum weight. In essence, it is the volume of shipments that can be transported using a standardised shipping container.
- Declared value is the value placed on imported goods by the importer. The value of the goods is declared for clearance at the port of entry. and it is used to determine the amount of duty to be paid on the imported goods.
- Declared value is the amount a shipper stated to the carrier that his shipment is worth. In case of any loss or damage to the shipment during transport, the carrier is liable to compensate the shipper on the basis of the declared value.
Delivery Note is a document that describes the content of a package. The document shows the list of goods and the amount enclosed in the shipment. In some cases, a copy of the delivery note may be signed by the receiver of the goods and send back to the seller.
A forwarding agent, also known as a freight forwarder, is an individual or a company that specialises in organising transports for individuals or corporations.
Basically, the forwarding agent is responsible for arranging the movement of goods from a point to another. For more details on this topic, please refer to our page discussing different types of freight forwarders.
Fumigation certificate is an approval document issued by the licensing authority to indicate that shipment and shipping materials have been properly fumigated. All the countries that require the certificate will not clear any shipment without it.
The certificate contains details about the fumigation of imported goods such as the purpose of treatment, the type of fumigants used, and the temperature range that was applied. All the information ensures that proper fumigation process has been followed.
Net weight is the weight of an item/product without the addition of the packaging or container weight. Net weight is also the weight of the total number of goods loaded into a container excluding the weight of the container.
Gross weight simply means the total weight of a load. In shipping, gross weight include the weight of the actual product being transported and the package used in wrapping it. Gross weight calculation depends on the type of transport system.
The difference in the meaning of gross weight, based on the type of transport system is:- For the air transport, gross weight is the summation of the aircraft, fuel, crew, passengers and cargo weights.
- For the rail and road transport, it is the summation weights of the actual goods and the wagon or vehicle.
- For the waterway transport, it is either the weight of the product and package or the container weight.
Incoterms are international terms developed and issued by the International Chamber of Commerce. Incoterms are formed of three-letter trade terms defining costs, tasks, and risks associated with the delivery and transportation of freight. Also known as International Commercial Terms, Incoterms are widely accepted and adopted by governments, service providers, industry practitioners, and legal authorities.
IALA stands for the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities, and it was previously referred to as International Association of Lighthouse Authorities.
IALA is a non profit, international organisation, founded in 1957. The organisation provides expert knowledge in navigation for different experts. It gathers together marine aids to navigation across the world by offering them the opportunity to exchange information, share technical experiences & achievements, and coordinate the improvement to aid navigation.
A package is the quantity of goods to be shipped. The goods are not transported individually but are bundled together on a pallet to form a unit. This can be crates, pallets, wire mesh pallets, roller containers and other loading equipment. A separate shipping document is required for each package. As a rule, a package is provided with a unique identifier during the transport process, which makes it possible to be tracked and traced.
In practice, a package is also often referred to as a parcel or packet. With the help of outer packaging and loading aids, several packaging units are combined to form a finished package. In this regard, the package is the same as the shipping unit.
A pallet is a flat, (usually wooden) structure that is used for handling transport, storing goods or transporting freight. Click here for more details about types of pallets, materials, and measurements.
Road transport is the physical process of transporting cargo or people by road using motor vehicles or other means such as bicycle, motorcycle, etc. In this case, road is a lane/route between the point of departure and the point of destination.
Compared to other types of transport system such as sea and air, the cost of maintaining roads is cheaper. Road transport can be in certain cases, the only method of transport in/to rural areas where other mode of transports is not available.
A shipper (also known as a consignor) is a person or a company responsible for organising and transporting goods from one point to another. Generally, the shipper bears the cost of freight, except otherwise stated in the transport contract before shipment.
A unit cost is a type of cost incurred by a company to assemble and/or create, store and sell one unit of a specific product. This simply means, the amount of expenses made by the company during the production process of a product to the point of sale.
This cost is an accounting measure that includes both the fixed costs and variable costs. The measure can be used to determine how efficient company’s operations are.
A zip code is a numerical code established by the United States Postal Service, used to route and identify pick-up and delivery areas. The term is also referred to as postal code.
